Implementation through the official Acquiring API monobank with support for tokenization and recurring payments
TradeMinister — in payment integrations for Shopify since 2016

plata by mono для Shopify — інтеграція платіжного шлюзу monobank, комісія 1,3%, Apple Pay, Google Pay, MonoPay
short answer

monobank recurring payments for Shopify automatically charge the customer’s card on a schedule, with no need to re-enter card details. The first payment stores a card token with monobank, and every following charge runs automatically to the schedule you set (monthly, weekly, annually). Built on the official monobank Acquiring API with tokenization support.

  • How it works: tokenization — monobank stores a card token, never the card details themselves (PCI DSS)
  • Schedule: daily, weekly, monthly or annually — configured per product
  • What the merchant gets: automatic charges with no customer involvement after the first authorisation
  • Best for: SaaS, subscription boxes, memberships, courses, donations, recurring delivery
  • Management: a subscriber portal (pause / cancel / change card) plus an admin panel for the store
  • Fee: the standard monobank 1.3% (Ukrainian cards) — no surcharge for recurring
  • Setup cost: ₴60,000 one-time
  • After 26 Aug 2026: keeps working — the payment block is built on a Checkout UI Extension, not on the additional scripts Shopify is switching off (what changes on 26 August 2026)

advantages of regular payments

🔁
automatic debits without client involvement
After the first successful payment, monobank saves the customer's card token. Subsequent scheduled payments (monthly, weekly, annually) are charged automatically — the customer does not need to re-enter card details or confirm the transaction. This is critically important for models with a low trust barrier: the buyer forgets about the subscription, and the seller receives predictable income.
📅
flexible scheduling at the product level
Each subscription product in Shopify has its own schedule: daily, weekly, monthly, every 2 months, quarterly, annually. The first billing date can be shifted (trial period), and the amount can be fixed or progressive (first month 1 ₴, then 500 ₴/month). Multiple subscriptions are supported — a customer can have several active subscriptions in one store.
💳
PCI DSS security through tokenization
The store does not store customers' card details — monobank does. At the first payment, monobank returns a token (a meaningless string) to the store, which can be used for future charges. A store database leak will not lead to card compromise. The store automatically complies with PCI DSS requirements (does not process cardholder data).
📊
predictable MRR for business
Recurring payments create an MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue) model — predictable monthly income. For SaaS, memberships, and subscription boxes, this is the foundation of the business: you can accurately plan purchases, hiring, and marketing expenses. The integration provides detailed subscription analytics (churn rate, LTV, MRR growth) in the Shopify admin panel.

how it works

01

the customer subscribes

The customer selects a subscription product in Shopify, specifies the parameters (plan, frequency), and proceeds to payment. During the first payment, the card is authorized through the monobank Acquiring API with the initiationKind: merchant flag — monobank saves the card token on its side and returns the token to the store. The token is linked to the customer in Shopify.

02

automatic scheduled deduction

The TradeMinister integration launches a background task (cron) according to the subscription schedule. At the time of billing, a POST /api/merchant/invoice/create is called with the client's card token — monobank automatically charges the amount without client involvement. On success, a Shopify order is created with the Subscription tag; on error (insufficient funds, card blocked), the client receives a notification, and retry logic is triggered (3 attempts within 72 hours).

03

the client manages the subscription

In the store's personal account (page /pages/subscriptions), the customer sees all active subscriptions with the dates of the next charges. They can pause, cancel, change the card, change the plan, or skip the next payment. For the store — an admin panel in Shopify with reports on MRR, churn rate, and failed charges. To cancel — a DELETE request is called in the Acquiring API, and the token is invalidated.

frequently asked questions

What are recurring payments and how do they differ from regular payments? +

Recurring payment — automatic deduction of funds from the client's card on a schedule without their involvement. The difference from a regular payment: the client authorizes the payment once (with 3D Secure), monobank saves the card token, and subsequent deductions are made using the token without the client's participation. This is the basis of subscription models: SaaS, Netflix-style services, subscription boxes, memberships, regular deliveries.

What is needed to set up recurring payments? +

Three components: 1) a current account of an individual entrepreneur or LLC in monobank, 2) a signed recurring merchant agreement with monobank (agreed through the monobank business portal, takes 5–10 business days; TradeMinister helps to complete the process), 3) an active Shopify store on the Basic plan or higher. For Shopify Plus, advanced features are available: segmented subscriptions, cohort discounts, whitelabel dashboard.

how is the security of card data ensured? +

Through tokenization, the store never receives or stores customers' card details. The first payment is processed on the monobank side (a secure form with 3D Secure), and after success, monobank returns a token to the store — a meaningless string like T123abc... that has no meaning outside monobank. Subsequent charges are made using the token. This ensures automatic PCI DSS compliance — the store does not handle cardholder data.

What payment schedules are supported? +

Daily, weekly, every 2 weeks, monthly, every 2 months, quarterly, every six months, annually. Custom schedules are also supported: for example, charging on the 1st and 15th of each month, or every first Monday of the month. Each subscription product can have its own schedule. Trial periods are supported (free period up to N days), as well as progressive pricing (first month 1 ₴, then 500 ₴/month).

what happens in case of unsuccessful debit? +

If the customer's card has insufficient funds or is blocked, a retry logic is triggered: 3 charge attempts within 72 hours (after 6, 24, and 72 hours from the first failure). The customer receives an email notification asking them to top up the card or change the card in their personal account. If all 3 attempts fail, the subscription is automatically set to paused status until the customer changes the card or the store manager manually reactivates it.

how can a customer cancel a subscription? +

The customer in the store's personal account (page /pages/subscriptions or /account) sees all active subscriptions with the dates of the next charges and a "Cancel" button. When canceling, the card token is invalidated on the monobank side via the DELETE API, and no further charges occur. Subscription pause is also supported (without canceling the token, with the ability to restore it with one click), card change (the customer authorizes a new card, the old one is invalidated), and plan change (upgrade/downgrade with proportional recalculation).

Who is the Shopify subscription model suitable for? +

For SaaS products (subscription access to the service), subscription boxes (beauty boxes, food boxes, book clubs), memberships and private clubs, fitness clubs and studios (subscriptions), media with paid content, educational platforms (monthly courses), digital products (subscription licenses), regularly consumed goods (pet food, cosmetics, vitamins, coffee), and donation platforms. Not suitable for one-time purchases of large appliances or clothing — for those, regular acquiring or monobank installment payments are better.
