On 26 August 2026 Shopify stops running script tags on the Thank You and Order Status pages for every store except Plus (for Plus this happened on 28 August 2025). If payment in your store is rendered on the thank-you page through “Additional scripts” or an app that uses a script tag, the payment button will stop appearing. Solutions built on Checkout UI Extensions and the Payment Apps API keep working unchanged.

What exactly is switched off on 26 August 2026
Shopify has been steadily retiring the legacy ways of customising checkout. The Thank You page and the Order Status page now run on Checkout Extensibility, where third-party code executes only inside isolated extensions.

The “Additional scripts” field in checkout settings became read-only back when Plus stores were migrated; after the automatic upgrade, every customisation built on it is lost for good.
Who this affects in the Ukrainian market
Shopify Payments is not available in Ukraine, so card payments always run through a third-party provider. Three patterns have emerged over the years, and 26 August affects only one of them.

An important nuance about Manual Payment Method
Manual Payment Method itself (“Manual payment methods” in the admin) is not being switched off and will keep working. What is being switched off is the mechanism that displays the payment button on the thank-you page, if that button is drawn by a script. So “we use Manual Payment Method, so this doesn’t concern us” is wrong: what matters is not the payment method but what draws the button.
How to check your store in five minutes

Settings → Checkout. Find the “Additional scripts” section for the order status page. If there is code there — especially anything mentioning a payment provider,
fetchorcreateElement— you are at risk. - Settings → Checkout → “Customize”. Open the Thank You page editor. If the payment block is there as a movable app block, it is a UI Extension and you are fine.

Place a test order and open developer tools on the thank-you page (F12) → Console tab. Errors like
Refused to load the script, or an empty space where the payment block should be, point to a script tag. - Ask your developer directly: “Is the integration built on a Checkout UI Extension or on additional scripts?” If the answer is “on scripts”, the solution has to be migrated.
What to do if payment has already stopped working
In order of urgency:
- Turn on a fallback payment method immediately. Cash on delivery, bank transfer or QR payments under NBU standard No. 97 let you keep taking orders while the migration is under way.
- Move the payment block to a Checkout UI Extension. The extension is published as an app — including a custom app built for your store only — and Shopify renders it natively.
- Consider moving to the Payment Apps API. If your volume justifies it, taking payment inside Shopify Checkout is the more robust architecture: the order is created after a successful payment, there are no pending orders, and Shop Pay and Shopify Markets work.
- Move analytics to web pixels. Conversion pixels that lived in additional scripts go dark along with the scripts — they need to be rebuilt as app pixels.

Frequently asked questions
My store is on the Basic plan. Does this affect me?
Yes. 26 August 2026 is the deadline precisely for the non-Plus plans: Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus stores went through this a year earlier.
Does it happen automatically, or do I have to do something?
Automatically. Shopify simply stops executing script tags on the order status page; nothing is required from the store, and the date cannot be deferred.
Will orders stop being created?
No. Checkout works as usual — what stops appearing is the payment block on the thank-you page. The order is created but stays unpaid, and the customer has no way to see how to pay.
Can I just put the additional scripts back?
No. The field is read-only, and after the automatic upgrade its contents are deleted. The only supported route is UI Extensions and web pixels.
What about script tags on ordinary storefront pages?
They keep working until 1 March 2027. Creating and updating them through the API stops being possible on 1 October 2026. For the storefront, the replacement is theme app extensions.
How do I tell whether my integration is already on a UI Extension?
In the checkout editor (Settings → Checkout → Customize → Thank you tab) the payment block appears as an app block you can move around. If there is no payment block there but one appears on the live page, it is almost certainly a script tag.
How long does migrating to a UI Extension take?
For a typical Ukrainian payment gateway integration, 1–3 business days including a test payment. Only the display mechanism changes — your acquiring contract and rates stay exactly as they are.

Stores whose payments depend on additional scripts need to migrate; stores on Checkout UI Extensions and the Payment Apps API need to do nothing.
