Portmone via the Payment Apps API: BankPay and IBAN payments in Shopify Checkout

Portmone connects to Shopify as a native payment method through the official Shopify Payment Apps API. What sets it apart from card-only gateways: alongside ordinary card payments, Portmone supports BankPay — an account-to-account (IBAN-to-IBAN) transfer that cannot be charged back. Setup is ₴17,625 one-time and the acquiring fee is up to 2%, with an individual rate negotiated for high turnover.

What BankPay is and who needs it

With an ordinary card payment, the customer can initiate a chargeback for months afterwards — disputing the payment through their bank. For the merchant that is a real risk: the money is taken back, the goods have already shipped, and the case has to be argued with documents.

BankPay is not a card transaction but a bank transfer that the customer confirms in their own online banking. There is no customer-side reversal mechanism, which makes it considerably calmer for categories with a high dispute rate — electronics, jewellery, services and B2B supply.

A word about the provider

Portmone has operated in the Ukrainian market since 2002 and is historically known as a service for utility bills and recurring payments — which means it is familiar to exactly the audience that hesitates to enter card details on an unfamiliar site. Since 2023 it has been part of the Kaspi.kz group.

How it works

  1. The customer goes through the standard Shopify Checkout and chooses Portmone at the payment step.
  2. They pick a method: Visa/Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay or BankPay (an IBAN transfer).
  3. Once the payment is confirmed, Shopify creates the order marked Paid — no unpaid orders appear.

Frequently asked questions

Is BankPay available as soon as I connect?

It is enabled separately by Portmone at the merchant’s request; card payments work from day one.

Are recurring payments supported?

Yes — recurring billing is historically one of Portmone’s strengths. It is a separate scenario, configured on request.

Was this solution affected by the script shutdown on 26 August 2026?

No. The Payment Apps API does not use script tags — there is more in our article on what changes on 26 August 2026.

Is there a cheaper option?

Yes — Portmone on the Thank You page from ₴8,800, with no Shopify third-party provider fee, though the order is created before payment.
