Since 2023 it has been part of Kaspi.kz, Kazakhstan’s largest fintech group with a market capitalisation above $10 billion. It is certified to the international PCI DSS standard and supports Visa, Mastercard, Prostir, Apple Pay, Google Pay and BankPay — an IBAN-to-IBAN payment made through a QR code in the customer’s banking app.

three ways to connect online acquiring to Shopify — and why it matters

There are three fundamentally different ways to connect online acquiring (including Portmone) to Shopify in the Ukrainian market: through the official Shopify Payment Apps API (our approach), through a Manual Payment Method with redirect (Walnut MultiPayments), or through a third-party checkout that replaces Shopify Checkout (Chekly). Only the first method is authorized by Shopify — the other two violate the platform’s rules in different ways.

❌ no (Shopify does not allow Checkout replacement)

Source of criteria — official Shopify Payment Apps API documentation and Shopify Acceptable Use Policy. Shopify explicitly requires that all online sales go through the standard Shopify Checkout — replacing Checkout with a third-party solution is considered a direct violation of the platform and Partner Program rules. The Manual Payment Method is intended for offline payments (bank transfer, cash on delivery), not for online acquiring — its use with a redirect to a payment page is a gray area.

Which Portmone option to choose: Thank You Page or Shopify Checkout

We offer two options for connecting Portmone to Shopify. They differ not only in price but also in operation logic: the Thank You Page option starts at 8,800 ₴; QR payment (NBU standard No. 97) is available upon request as a separate service. The Checkout option via Payment Apps API is more expensive but provides clear financial reporting without pending orders, follows mainstream gateway standards, and includes exclusive BankPay.

03

three key advantages of Portmone Checkout

01
BankPay — payment without chargeback and PRRO
BankPay is an innovative payment method from Portmone, launched in November 2024. The customer scans or clicks on a QR code — their banking app opens with the payment details and amount filled in. The money is transferred directly from the customer's IBAN to the seller's IBAN. Chargebacks are not possible (this is a transfer between accounts, not a card transaction). PRRO is not required for BankPay — it is a cashless transfer to the account according to the tax authority's clarification. 3D Secure is not needed — the transaction is authorized by biometrics in the customer's bank. Supported banks include PrivatBank, monobank, izibank, PUMB, Globus Bank, Credit Agricole, OTP Bank, and others.
02
maturity and stability of the infrastructure
Portmone has been operating since 2002 — 23 years in the Ukrainian market. It has survived all crises, blackouts, and DDoS attacks. PCI DSS Level 1 certification — an international payment security standard. Since 2023, part of Kaspi.kz — the largest fintech holding in Kazakhstan with a market capitalization of over $10 billion on NASDAQ and LSE. For high-turnover Shopify stores, infrastructure stability is critical: Portmone handles Black Friday peak loads without failures.
03
custom rate for large stores
The standard Portmone commission for online stores is 2.3%. For stores with a turnover of 1,000,000 ₴/month or specific categories (utilities, insurance, B2B), a negotiated rate starting from 1.5% applies. This can be more advantageous than the fixed 2.75% at LiqPay and 2% at WayForPay. Personal integration manager, dedicated technical support, and the ability to customize the payment page to match your brand.
04

how Portmone Checkout works through the Payment Apps API

01

the customer places an order in Shopify Checkout

The customer fills the cart and proceeds to the standard Shopify Checkout. At the Payment step, they see Portmone as a payment method — natively integrated into the Shopify interface. Available options: Visa, Mastercard, Prostir, Apple Pay, Google Pay, BankPay.

02

the customer pays through Portmone

When selecting Portmone, you are redirected to a secure Portmone payment page or an inline form opens, depending on the chosen method. When selecting BankPay, a QR code appears for scanning with a smartphone camera or a click opens the banking app. Payment confirmation in the client app is done via biometrics or PIN.

03

the order is created in Shopify after successful payment

Through the Shopify Payment Apps API, Shopify receives payment confirmation from Portmone and creates an order with the status Paid. The buyer receives a confirmation email, and the seller sees the paid order in Shopify Admin. Unlike Thank You Page integrations, the order is not created before payment: no payment, no order; payment made, order is Paid. No pending orders and no manual moderation.

frequently asked questions

How does Portmone Checkout differ from the Thank You Page version? +

Thank You Page integration Portmone (from 8,800 ₴) works through Manual Payment Method with a redirect to the payment page after order placement — the order in Shopify is created before payment. The Checkout version (17,625 ₴) uses the official Shopify Payment Apps API: payment is integrated into the standard Shopify Checkout at the Payment step, the order is created only after successful payment. The Checkout version offers full legality, no pending orders, the best UX for the buyer, and compliance with Shopify ToS.

What is BankPay and how is it different from regular card payment? +

BankPay is an innovative payment method from Portmone (launched in November 2024). Instead of entering card details, the customer scans or clicks on a QR code — their banking app opens with the payment details filled in, and they confirm the IBAN-to-IBAN transfer. Three key differences: 1) no chargeback (this is a transfer between accounts, not a card transaction); 2) no 3D Secure required; 3) fiscalization (PRRO) is not required for BankPay — it is a cashless transfer to an account according to the tax authority's clarification.

What is the Portmone commission for a Shopify store? +

The standard rate for online stores is 2.3%. For utility/service companies — from 1.5%. For insurance companies — 2.1%. For large stores (turnover from 1,000,000 ₴/month) — negotiable rate from 1.5%. For foreign cards — individually. Specific terms are clarified when signing a contract with Portmone — a personal integration manager.

Does Portmone support Apple Pay and Google Pay? +

Yes, natively. After connecting Portmone Checkout, Apple Pay and Google Pay automatically appear at the Payment step in Shopify Checkout without additional settings. An iPhone user sees the Apple Pay button, an Android user sees Google Pay, allowing one-tap payment without entering card details. This works thanks to the built-in support of the Shopify Payment Apps API and the capabilities of the Portmone API.

Do recurring payments work in Portmone for Shopify? +

Yes. Portmone supports recurring (regular) payments through a separate API — the client confirms the card once, and then charges occur automatically according to the schedule. In Shopify, this is useful for subscription models (Shopify Subscriptions). It is set up separately after the basic integration and is discussed individually depending on the specifics of the subscription product.

What to do if Portmone refuses to connect? +

If Portmone refuses for any reason (high-risk categories, insufficient documents, business specifics), we will refund the full integration cost of 17,625 ₴. In this case, we offer alternatives: plata by mono (if you can open an account with monobank) or WayForPay (the most liberal moderation among Ukrainian gateways). We want your payment system to work — we will help you find the right solution.
