Shoppers no longer come to your site — what to do about traffic from ChatGPT

part 1 · visibility in AI engines

Roughly a third of the people who would once have found your store in Google will not find it now. Not because you did anything wrong. Because they never reach Google’s results page at all.

A shopper opens ChatGPT, asks about a product — and gets three names. If your store is not among those three, you do not exist for them.

In 2026, 58–60% of search sessions end without a visit to a website. On shopping queries the figure is higher. Old-school SEO no longer covers half the buying journey. The new rules require a store to be “machine-readable”, not just visible to Google.

Picture a familiar scene.

On a Friday evening someone opens ChatGPT and types: “Help me choose a coffee machine for an office of 30 people, budget around ₴60,000.” Ten seconds later the answer holds three names. A short comparison. Prices. Where to buy.

This has already happened. Not this evening — but yesterday, and the day before, and every day, for thousands of people.

From there, only two outcomes exist. Either your store is among those three names, or it is not. There is no third option. The shopper will not “come to your site to compare you with competitors” — they already have their answer. If you were not in it, you do not exist for them at all.

01 · the scale

the new reality of shopping queries

According to public 2026 reports, an average of 58–60% of search sessions now end without a visit to a website. On shopping queries it is higher. ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews answer immediately — with specific brands named, or without.

And here is the uncomfortable part: a store that does everything right by the old rules — decent SEO, tidy descriptions, good photography — can be invisible under the new ones.

old rules vs new

The old rules: you optimise a page for a query, climb the results, someone clicks, and chooses between you and three competitors.

The new rules: a model stands between you and the shopper — it reads millions of product descriptions and returns three brands. Not the highest ranked, not the most advertised, but the ones it “understands” best as an answer to that specific question.

Being visible in Google is not enough to become one of those three. You have to be readable by a machine.

Most stores have not registered this yet. They watch organic traffic fall and think: “Google changed the algorithm, we should wait it out.” It did not. People simply reach Google less often.

02 · the time gap

why waiting is the most expensive strategy

A store that is invisible to AI engines today will not “sort it out in a couple of months”. Large language models refresh their knowledge base with a six- to eight-month lag. Which means whoever establishes themselves now will keep latecomers out for the whole of the next annual cycle. And conversely: a store absent today may not get in before next summer.

The window is still open. Not forever — but for now, yes.

03 · the good news

why the window is still open

Most Shopify stores are invisible to AI engines not because of a weak product or a weak brand, but for technical reasons. By our measurements, around 88% of Shopify stores lack complete product markup and consistency between the page and the product feed.

Which raises a fair question: what actually decides whether your store makes it into those three names in a ChatGPT answer? That is a story of its own, and it is more involved than “do good SEO”. We will cover it in the next article.

In the meantime, try it yourself. Open ChatGPT. Ask it the most typical question a shopper in your category would ask — the kind someone who has never heard of your store would type. See whether you are mentioned. If you are not, this is no longer a marketing problem. It is a revenue problem, and it shows up immediately.
