plata by mono for Shopify Checkout: native monobank payment gateway that Shopify will not block

plata by mono для Shopify Checkout: нативный платёжный шлюз monobank, который Shopify не заблокирует
 tl;dr · short answer

01 — market

Why the market waited for exactly this

The Ukrainian Shopify segment lived in compromise for years. Shopify Payments has not launched in Ukraine — and will not in the near future. A whole industry of semi-legal solutions grew in this void: third-party checkouts like Chekly and Wallnut, which completely replaced the standard Shopify Checkout with their own.

All of this worked. It still works now. But all of this was outside Shopify's rules, and the store owner always bore the risk.

plata by mono Checkout is a real way for a Ukrainian store to accept monobank payments on Shopify without violating any platform rules. — a technical fact, not marketing

In our previous article about whether it is legal to use third-party checkout in Shopify, we detailed the legal mechanics: Shopify's official documents explicitly prohibit bypassing the standard Checkout, the API Terms clearly require express written authorization for any alternative to Shopify Checkout, and the App Store requirements forbid apps that bypass checkout or payment processing.

02 — how it works

What is Payment Apps API in simple terms

Shopify Payment Apps API is the platform's official mechanism through which Stripe, Adyen, Mollie, and other major acquirers connect in countries where Shopify Payments is available. Shopify Payments is not available in Ukraine, and until recently, there was practically no one to use this API.

The situation has now changed. Through the Payment Apps API in Ukraine, three solutions are connected: plata by mono (monobank), LiqPay (PrivatBank), WayForPay, and Hutko (PUMB). All four are legal, all have passed Shopify review, and all create orders after successful payment.

What this gives the store

  • No pending orders. The order appears in the admin only after monobank confirms receipt of funds. No gap between orders and money.
  • Full compatibility with the Shopify ecosystem. Shop Pay works. Shopify Markets works. Bundled Discounts work. Checkout UI Extensions work.
  • Protection from blocking. The store complies with clause 4.5 ToS Shopify. No emails from Shopify Trust & Safety.
03 — through the customer's eyes

How it looks for the customer

The customer notices nothing new — and this is the most important part. They do not go to an external site. They do not see a "you are leaving the store" window. They go through the standard Shopify Checkout, which Shopify has optimized for years and which has one of the highest conversion rates in global e-commerce.

No workarounds. No "trust us, the order will arrive." No parallel interfaces that Shopify does not control.

04 — economics

What it really costs

This is the most honest part because the market is used to half-truths. The final commission on Shopify Payment Apps API is formed from four components — and this is the standard worldwide, not just in Ukraine.

06 — migration

What if I’m already on Wallnut or Chekly?

This is a common question. In short: switch. Longer answer: the economics of switching almost always favor plata by mono Checkout because you eliminate not only legal risk but also technical debt.

What you are paying for third-party checkout right now (even if you don’t see it on the receipt)

risk 01 · regulatory

Shopify prohibits Checkout alternatives without written permission

Today the store operates, tomorrow a letter arrives from Shopify Trust & Safety. The store owner is the contracting party with Shopify, not the third-party checkout seller. The 100% risk lies with the owner.

risk 02 · ecosystem

Without Shop Pay you lose 10–20% mobile conversion

Customers have already saved data in Shop Pay at other stores — without your support of native Shopify Checkout, they won’t get one-tap payment. Without Shopify Markets — scaling to new markets is difficult.

risk 03 · synchronization

Orders are imported into Shopify via API — every callback failure is a "lost" order

At a volume of 100+ orders/day, this requires a dedicated staff member who manually reconciles the bank statement with the Shopify admin and manually creates records of missed sales.

risk 04 · analytics

Black box: Shopify Analytics does not see what happened on the third-party checkout

Conversion funnel — in an external service. You build traffic source attribution to payment separately. Google Ads and Meta Pixel events through third-party checkouts work unreliably.

Before → after migration to plata by mono Checkout

was · third-party checkout
became · Payment Apps API
Order in the admin panel has Pending status until the manager manually reconciles the statement
Order is automatically created with status Paid after a successful callback from monobank
Checkout conversion — report in an external interface, UTM parameters are lost on redirect
Standard Shopify Analytics, full tracking of sources and UTM
Shop Pay is unavailable. The customer goes through the entire checkout from scratch
Shop Pay is active. Returning customers complete payment with one-tap
Risk of store suspension after a letter from Shopify Trust & Safety
Store fully complies with ToS — no risks
“Package,” “subscription,” “checkout provider tariff” — unclear fees
1.3% for UA cards + Shopify fee + 0.4% developer fee. Transparent

Switching to plata by mono Checkout takes 1–3 business days. The store does not stop: we set up in test mode, check callbacks on a real order, then switch.

07 — faq

Answers most often searched for on Google

Is this legal?
Yes. Plata by mono Checkout works through the official Shopify Payment Apps API — the same mechanism used by Stripe, Adyen, Mollie, and other mainstream providers to connect to Shopify in countries where Shopify Payments is available. The store complies with clause 4.5 of Shopify's ToS (use of standard Checkout) and App Store requirements (no bypass checkout).
How is this different from the Thank You Page option?
In the Thank You Page option, the order is created before payment — the buyer first places the order (status Pending), then pays. In the Checkout option, the order is created after successful payment. No pending orders, no manual reconciliation with statements. The Thank You Page option is cheaper to launch and offers a slightly lower fee (no Shopify third-party fee), so it remains a valid choice for small stores — details on the pages Checkout and Thank You Page.
Can plata by mono Checkout and LiqPay be used simultaneously?
Yes. You can connect multiple Payment Apps simultaneously — at the Payment step, the buyer chooses the desired method. For stores with international traffic, the recommended combination is: plata by mono Checkout as the main option (1.3% for UA cards — the most advantageous) + LiqPay Checkout as a backup (works with any Ukrainian bank, provides Privat24).
How long does the connection take?
1–3 business days after application approval. Steps: installing the Shopify Payment App in the store, setting up monobank and FOP/LLC details, activating payment methods (Apple Pay, Google Pay, MonoPay), testing with a real order, handing over instructions to admins.
What are the business requirements?
A current account for an individual entrepreneur (FOP) or LLC in monobank (opened online within 1 business day in the monobank app), an active Shopify store on any plan. No additional licenses, no approvals from Shopify support — uses an already approved payment app.
What about fiscalization (PRRO)?
Shopify Payment Apps API from monobank does not include built-in PRRO. Fiscalization is connected via a separate app: Vchasno.Kasa for Shopify (our development with a 5.0 rating — webhook after payment automatically issues a receipt) or Checkbox PRRO. Both comply with the Law of Ukraine on RRO and the requirements of the State Tax Service.
Is it possible to switch from Wallnut or Chekly without store downtime?
Yes. We connect plata by mono Checkout in test mode alongside the current solution, check callbacks on a real order with your bank card, and after confirmation, switch over. Store downtime — 0 minutes. The old checkout is disabled only after confirmed launch of the new one.
Why is Hutko with PUMB cheaper?
Hutko — a similar product from PUMB via Payment Apps API. Standard acquiring rate 1.5% (versus 1.3% at monobank) — here plata by mono wins on UA cards. Hutko wins with built-in PRRO. Plata by mono wins with MonoPay (payment directly from the monobank app without card input) and does not require switching to PUMB as a bank — the account remains in monobank.
How to choose between plata by mono, LiqPay, and Hutko?
monobank client with an account in monobank → plata by mono (1.3% UA + MonoPay). PrivatBank client with Ukrainian trafficLiqPay Checkout (Privat24 without card input, instant 24/7). PUMB client or need built-in PRRO → Hutko. The economics of rates differ by 0.2–0.5 percentage points — often the deciding factor is not the commission but the infrastructure (bank, audience, PRRO).
