60% of searches end without a click. That is not a catastrophe — it is the new top of the funnel

AEO FOR SHOPIFY · WEEK 8 03 Zero-click — the new top of the funnel trademinister.com.ua 60% zero-click citation brand recall click

In 2024, roughly 60% of searches in the US ended without a single click. By 2026 the figure had grown. If you keep measuring success by session count, your dashboard shows a decline. The reality is different: half the funnel has moved somewhere Google Analytics cannot see — and never will.

01

A citation in an AI answer is shelf space, not a lost click

A shopper asks ChatGPT “which wireless headphones with active noise cancellation under €200”. The AI replies with three models and three sources. If your store is among those three sources, that is not “lost traffic”. Someone has just put your product on the shelf, free of charge, in a shop where the customer chooses between three options instead of twenty.

The shopper will not click now. They will click in three to seven days — directly, by brand, from a bookmark or a branded search. In Google Analytics that click shows up as “direct traffic” or “organic — branded”. The link back to the AI mention is gone. But it was there.

02

Shopify’s two-layer measurement model

In Shopify’s official guide, senior SEO specialist Greg Bernhardt splits AI results into two measurable layers.

The generated part of the answer. Two facts are measured here: was your brand mentioned (yes/no) and in what tone (positive/negative). Track it by running your key queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews periodically by hand — or through specialised tools such as OmniSEO.

The citation list. Here you measure position. A citation in first place produces a fundamentally different click rate from one in fifth. This layer is a continuation of classic SEO and its ranking logic.

03

Referral traffic — the part you can already see

Open Google Analytics → Acquisition → Source/Medium and look for the domains `chatgpt.com`, `perplexity.ai`, `claude.ai` and `gemini.google.com`. For stores doing AEO properly these are no longer zeroes. A bonus: AI traffic typically converts 1.5–2× better than cold organic — the user arrives prepared, after doing their research.

The downside: traffic from Google AI Overviews is not broken out separately. Google lumps it in with the rest of its traffic. You will have to live with that — the only workaround is watching branded search trends in Search Console.

04

What to do this week

Build a minimal AEO dashboard in a day. Three blocks.

Block 1: mentions. A list of 20 queries you want to be cited for. Run them through ChatGPT and Perplexity once a week. Record: mentioned? position? tone?

Block 2: referral traffic. In Google Analytics, create a segment for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and the rest. Measure sessions, conversions and average order value.

Block 3: branded search. In Google Search Console, watch the trend for queries containing your brand. Growth means AEO is working, even if direct referrals are still thin.

If those three blocks are flat, AEO is not working. If they are moving, you are inside the 60% of searches that supposedly never happened.
