NovaPay for Shopify: comparisons, scenarios and answers

how it compares with the alternatives on the Ukrainian Shopify market

There are three fundamentally different approaches to connecting acquiring on the Thank You page in the Ukrainian Shopify market. TradeMinister + NovaPay is a payment integration through Manual Payment Method with a single provider for both payments and logistics (NovaPay at 1.3% on Ukrainian cards plus the Nova Poshta API for creating waybills automatically): the standard Shopify Checkout is preserved and payment happens on the Thank You page. Walnut Checkout and Chekly both replace the standard Shopify Checkout with their own: Walnut Checkout does not support NovaPay as a provider and does not integrate with the Nova Poshta API, while Chekly depends on whichever providers are connected. On compliance: NovaPay complies with the Shopify Terms of use (section 8); Walnut Checkout and Chekly directly breach Shopify’s rules by replacing the standard Checkout with a third-party one.

The criteria come from the Shopify Terms of use (section 8). Shopify requires all online sales to go through the standard Shopify Checkout — replacing Checkout with a third-party solution (as Walnut Checkout and Chekly do) is classed as a Partner Program violation and can get a store suspended. NovaPay on the Thank You page runs through Manual Payment Method, a built-in Shopify mechanism: the standard Checkout is preserved and the setup complies with section 8 of the Terms of use.

TradeMinister + NovaPay suits stores where Nova Poshta is the main delivery method (85%+ of Ukrainian online stores): one provider for payments and logistics, one legal entity for reporting, automatic waybill creation after payment, and unified reconciliation of prepayments and balances on cash-on-delivery orders. Walnut Checkout and Chekly offer neither NovaPay as a provider nor Nova Poshta API integration.

NovaPay and the other Ukrainian payment gateways for Shopify

Ukraine has five main payment gateways for online acquiring that TradeMinister connects to Shopify through a Manual Payment Method on the Thank You page. On the fee for Ukrainian cards, NovaPay (1.3%) and plata by mono (1.3%) are the lowest on the market. On distinctive features the choice looks like this: NovaPay — a single ecosystem with Nova Poshta (payments and logistics in one dashboard, waybills created automatically); plata by mono — MonoPay straight from the monobank app; LiqPay — the familiar PrivatPay button for PrivatBank customers; WayForPay — instalments (2–25 payments); Portmone — native recurring payments and tokenization for subscription models. All prices start at ₴8,800 one-time.

When to choose NovaPay: your store works heavily with Nova Poshta (as most Ukrainian online stores do), you have plenty of cash-on-delivery orders, and automating waybill creation and reconciling prepayments against balances on delivery matters to you. The combined NovaPay + Nova Poshta ecosystem covers the whole cycle from payment to delivery in one dashboard under one legal entity — no drift between payments and logistics.

If your store uses several delivery methods in parallel (Ukrposhta, courier services, click-and-collect), the advantage of the single NovaPay ecosystem partly disappears, and it is worth looking at plata by mono (the same 1.3% plus MonoPay) or LiqPay (the recognisable PrivatPay button). For subscription models, Portmone with native tokenization is the better fit. For instalments — WayForPay.

in depth — NovaPay and the Nova Poshta integration

How do I connect NovaPay to Shopify?

A NovaPay integration with Shopify through TradeMinister takes 1–3 business days. The developer installs the module on the Thank You page, configures the connection to the NovaPay Internet Acquiring API, tests payment on a real order and hands over documentation. After payment NovaPay sends a callback and the Shopify order status changes to Paid automatically. You will need an active contract with Nova Poshta, a NovaPay account (registration at novapay.ua is free), a business account for a sole proprietor or LLC, and a live Shopify store.

How much does a NovaPay integration for Shopify cost?

There are three options: full payment — ₴8,800; payment with Nova Poshta API integration (automatic waybill creation and cash on delivery) — ₴10,800; full KeyCRM integration — ₴17,400. QR payments under NBU standard No. 97 can be added on request as a separate service. Maintenance from year two is ₴3,600 a year (hosting for the QR reconciliation server plus technical support). NovaPay acquiring is 1.3%. TradeMinister charges no additional transaction fees.

What does the NovaPay + Nova Poshta API integration give a Shopify store?

The “payment + Nova Poshta API” option (₴10,800) includes automatic creation of a Nova Poshta waybill after a successful payment. Recipient details from the Shopify order (name, phone, city, branch or delivery address) are passed into the waybill automatically — nobody has to create each shipment by hand. With cash on delivery plus a prepayment, the waybill states the balance the recipient owes when the parcel is handed over. Waybill numbers sync back into Shopify as the fulfillment tracking number, so the customer receives shipment status and a tracking link automatically. The combined NovaPay + Nova Poshta ecosystem also makes reconciling payments against deliveries simpler for accounting.

Why do merchants choose NovaPay over LiqPay or WayForPay?

NovaPay is the best fit for stores where Nova Poshta is the main delivery method (85%+ of Ukrainian online stores). The main advantages: (1) a 1.3% fee — lower than LiqPay (2.75%) and WayForPay (2%); (2) a single provider for payments and logistics — one dashboard, one legal entity for reporting; (3) automatic reconciliation of prepayments against cash-on-delivery balances (elsewhere this is done by hand); (4) refunds on returned parcels automated within one system. The downside is the lack of instalments — for that, use WayForPay.

Does NovaPay integrate with KeyCRM?

Yes. The “full KeyCRM integration” option (₴17,400) syncs every NovaPay order into KeyCRM: the prepayment (paid through NovaPay) and the balance due (pending with Nova Poshta on delivery). Once the customer receives the order, Nova Poshta returns the balance and KeyCRM closes the outstanding record automatically. The result is accurate financial reporting with no manual corrections. The integration runs on the NovaPay API and the KeyCRM API. TradeMinister has been building Shopify payment integrations since 2016.

Which payment methods does NovaPay support?

NovaPay supports Visa and Mastercard from any bank, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay on all devices. The payment page adapts automatically to the customer’s device. On request, direct QR payments to an IBAN are available as a separate service (NBU standard No. 97) — a good fit for customers who prefer a transfer with no acquiring fee. NovaPay does not support instalments; for that, use WayForPay (2–25 monobank payments / 2–12 PrivatBank payments).

Is fiscalisation (PRRO) required for cash on delivery through NovaPay on Shopify?

Yes — Ukrainian law requires it when a cash-on-delivery payment is credited to a sole proprietor’s account through NovaPay. The State Tax Service set out its position in individual tax consultation No. 1693/ІПК/99-00-07-04-01-06 of 4 July 2023: accepting funds through NovaPay on a Nova Poshta cash-on-delivery shipment requires an RRO/PRRO and a fiscal receipt. Penalties for operating without one start at 100% of the receipt value under Ukrainian law No. 265/95-ВР on cash registers in trade.

The technical answer is to connect a software cash register from the Shopify App Store alongside NovaPay: Vchasno.Kasa (our app, ★ 5.0 in the App Store) issues fiscal receipts automatically on every cash-on-delivery payment, with no manual work. Checkbox PRRO is an alternative. The cost is ₴300–500 a month depending on receipt volume. TradeMinister connects Vchasno.Kasa in parallel with the NovaPay integration — one launch, one set of instructions for your team.

How does MultiFOP work with NovaPay in a single Shopify store?

The MultiFOP option (₴40,000 one-time) is for businesses that sell through several sole proprietors but do not want to split the storefront into separate Shopify stores. The NovaPay specifics: each sole proprietor gets their own NovaPay merchant account and their own Nova Poshta contract — which means funds land in the correct bank accounts and waybills are issued under the correct sender with no manual edits. PRRO receipts are split on the Vchasno.Kasa or Checkbox side: each proprietor gets their own cash register and digital signature key, and receipts are routed to the right register automatically. The rule for picking a proprietor per order is configured to your processes: by fulfilment warehouse, by product tag or collection, by order value or any other criterion. Separate reports and payouts from NovaPay for each proprietor keep tax accounting accurate without splitting transactions by hand. MultiFOP includes one year of support.

Frequently asked questions: scenarios and integrations

can QR payments be added to the same page?

On request we add QR payments under NBU standard No. 97 as a separate service. The Thank You page then shows a QR code with the IBAN details next to the card button. The customer can scan it with any banking app. There is no acquiring fee and no fiscalisation requirement.

how does cash on delivery with a prepayment work?

When placing an order for Nova Poshta cash-on-delivery, the customer pays the prepayment amount (say ₴200) on the Thank You page through NovaPay. A PRRO receipt is issued for that amount through Checkbox. The balance is passed into the Nova Poshta waybill as a “money transfer on instruction” and paid on collection. Unified NovaPay reporting makes reconciling prepayments and balances straightforward.

how do I refund a customer?

Card refunds are made from the NovaPay dashboard, or automatically through the NovaPay API. Funds return to the customer’s card within the usual timeframe (up to 10 banking days). If a parcel is returned through Nova Poshta, the combined NovaPay ecosystem lets you automate the prepayment refund. QR payments are refunded through online banking as an ordinary transfer.

is fiscalisation mandatory for cash on delivery?

Yes, it is. Per the State Tax Service position (individual tax consultation No. 1693/ІПК/99-00-07-04-01-06 of 4 July 2023), Nova Poshta cash on delivery credited to a sole proprietor’s account through NovaPay requires an RRO/PRRO. This is Ukrainian law rather than our rule — penalties for operating without one start at 100% of the receipt value.

The answer: connect Vchasno.Kasa (our Shopify App Store app, ★ 5.0), which issues fiscal receipts automatically for every paid parcel. Checkbox PRRO is an alternative. The cost is ₴300–500 a month depending on volume. We help connect and configure it as part of the NovaPay service.

how does MultiFOP work in a single Shopify store?

The MultiFOP option (₴40,000) connects several sole proprietors to one Shopify store without separate storefronts. Each proprietor gets their own NovaPay merchant account and Nova Poshta contract, so payments and waybills are routed to the correct sender automatically. PRRO receipts are split by proprietor through separate cashiers in Vchasno.Kasa or Checkbox. The rule for choosing a proprietor is configured to your business: by fulfilment warehouse, product tag, collection or any other rule. Each proprietor receives their own NovaPay payouts and their own reporting — with no manual splitting.
