compared with Hutko — both on the Payment Apps API, different economics

Hutko is a payment service from PUMB that also integrates with Shopify through the official Payment Apps API. In compliance terms the two are identical: both use a sanctioned Shopify mechanism, the order is created after payment, and there are no pending orders. The differences lie in the fee structure, multi-bank account coverage, tariff flexibility, and the availability of BankPay — Portmone’s exclusive IBAN-to-IBAN method, which Hutko does not have.

On the same Shopify plan the effective rate differs by 1.2 percentage points in Hutko’s favour, against Portmone’s standard 2.3%. With a negotiated Portmone rate from 1.5% — available above ₴1,000,000 a month in turnover or for specific categories such as utilities, insurance and B2B — the gap closes to zero, and the decision comes down to non-financial criteria:

Below ₴300,000 a month — Hutko is the better deal (Portmone’s standard 2.3% is not offset by its extras). ₴300,000–1,000,000 a month — Portmone wins where BankPay accounts for a meaningful share (IBAN-to-IBAN, no chargebacks, no fiscalisation) and where multi-bank support matters (an account at any Ukrainian bank, versus a mandatory PUMB account for Hutko). Above ₴1,000,000 a month — a negotiated Portmone rate from 1.5% makes the economics comparable, and the choice becomes one of infrastructure. Hutko wins on built-in fiscalisation with no separate app. Portmone wins on maturity (since 2002, part of Kaspi.kz, PCI DSS Level 1) and on BankPay.

in depth — the Payment Apps API, BankPay and the Ukrainian market

what the Shopify Payment Apps API is, and why it is the only compliant route

The Shopify Payment Apps API is the platform’s official mechanism for integrating payment providers into the standard Checkout. Every mainstream alternative to Shopify Payments in a given country (Stripe, Adyen and Mollie in Western markets; Hutko, plata by mono, LiqPay, WayForPay and Portmone in Ukraine) connects through it.

The API covers three jobs:

  • it passes payment session data from Shopify to the app (amount, currency, transaction identifier);
  • it receives payment confirmation from the app through a webhook and creates the order marked Paid;
  • it relays refund requests from Shopify Admin back to the payment system.

What that gives the merchant: full compliance with Shopify’s rules (the app passes Shopify review, so the store is not at risk of suspension for a ToS breach), support for Checkout Extensibility with no extra work, and stability across platform updates (Shopify guarantees backwards compatibility of the API).

why BankPay matters for Ukrainian eCommerce

BankPay solves three long-standing problems in Ukrainian online retail. The first is chargeback fraud: a bad-faith customer pays by card, receives the goods and 30–60 days later initiates a chargeback through their bank. Under Visa/Mastercard rules a chargeback almost always goes the customer’s way, and the merchant loses both the money and the goods. BankPay is an IBAN-to-IBAN transfer rather than a card transaction, so Visa/Mastercard rules do not apply and a chargeback is impossible in principle.

The second problem is 3-D Secure: up to 10% of card payments fail because of 3DS issues — the SMS never arrives, the bank limit blocks it, the phone number on file is out of date. BankPay is authorised by biometrics in the customer’s own banking app, so there are no 3DS failures.

The third problem is fiscalisation for smaller stores: connecting a software cash register, paying a subscription and keeping receipts under control. BankPay is a cashless IBAN-to-IBAN transfer, and per State Tax Service guidance no PRRO is used for such operations. A store where a meaningful share of payments comes through BankPay saves on the fiscalisation subscription and simplifies its reporting.

how the total Portmone fee on Shopify is made up

Any Payment Apps API gateway on Shopify (Portmone, Hutko, plata by mono, LiqPay or WayForPay) builds its effective rate from four components:

  • the Shopify third-party transaction fee — the penalty for not using Shopify Payments. It depends on the plan: Basic 2%, Grow 1%, Advanced 0.6%, Plus 0.15%;
  • the payment app developer fee — charged by the integrator for support and updates (0.4% at TradeMinister);
  • the Shopify platform fee — a flat 0.35% on every transaction in every country except the US;
  • the Portmone acquiring fee — the main component: 2.3% standard for online stores, from 1.5% negotiated for high volumes or specific categories.

The total on Shopify Basic for Ukrainian cards is 5.05% (2 + 0.4 + 0.35 + 2.3). On Advanced: 3.65% (0.6 + 0.4 + 0.35 + 2.3). At a negotiated 1.5% on Advanced: 2.85% (0.6 + 0.4 + 0.35 + 1.5). Above ₴1,000,000 a month, moving to Shopify Advanced and negotiating a Portmone rate pays for itself within two to four months.

Ukrainian legal requirements and Portmone for Shopify

Portmone acquiring for Shopify meets the core requirements for online retail in Ukraine:

  • settlement in hryvnia at the NBU rate — the card is always charged in UAH at the rate current at the time of payment, even if the storefront shows USD or EUR through Shopify Markets;
  • a sole proprietor or LLC account — payments can only be received into the business account of a legal entity or registered entrepreneur at a Ukrainian bank;
  • financial monitoring — payments pass Portmone’s automatic screening for signs of suspicious activity;
  • fiscalisation — the Portmone Payment App has no built-in PRRO. For card payments it is connected as a separate app: Vchasno.Kasa (built by us) or Checkbox PRRO from the Shopify App Store. BankPay needs no PRRO — it is a cashless IBAN-to-IBAN transfer;
  • refunds — handled through the standard Shopify Admin; funds return to the customer’s card within 10 banking days, and BankPay refunds arrive the next day through Portmone.

alternatives to Portmone Checkout for a Ukrainian store

Five solutions are available in the Ukrainian market through the Shopify Payment Apps API: Portmone, plata by mono, LiqPay, WayForPay and Hutko. All are compliant and behave identically as far as Shopify is concerned.

Where each is strongest:

  • plata by mono Checkout — the lowest fee (1.3% on Ukrainian cards), for stores banking with monobank;
  • LiqPay Checkout — PrivatBank instalments up to 25 payments, and broad customer trust;
  • WayForPay Checkout — instalments from three banks (monobank, PrivatBank, A-Bank) and the most liberal onboarding;
  • Portmone Checkout (this page) — BankPay as an exclusive, a negotiated rate for high volumes, and maturity dating back to 2002.

what BankPay is and why it is unique

what BankPay is and how it works

BankPay is an innovative payment method from Portmone, launched in November 2024. It is Ukraine’s first full account-to-account (IBAN-to-IBAN) payment made with a QR code through the customer’s banking app — an equivalent of Europe’s SEPA Instant Credit Transfer adapted to the Ukrainian financial market under the NBU’s QR standards.

What the customer does:

  1. Selects BankPay as the payment method in Shopify Checkout.
  2. A QR code or a link appears, depending on the device.
  3. On mobile they tap the QR and their banking app opens. On desktop they scan the QR with their phone camera.
  4. The banking app already has the IBAN, amount and payment reference filled in.
  5. They confirm the transfer with biometrics or a PIN — and the money lands on the store’s IBAN immediately.

Supported banks: PrivatBank, monobank, izibank, PUMB, Globus Bank, Crédit Agricole Bank, OTP Bank, Bank Credit Dnipro — and the list keeps growing.

what BankPay gives the merchant

  • Zero chargebacks. It is a transfer between bank accounts, not a card transaction, so Visa/Mastercard scheme rules do not apply. A customer cannot raise a chargeback 60 days later — the merchant is fully protected.
  • No 3-D Secure. BankPay does not use 3DS: the operation is authorised directly in the customer’s banking app with biometrics or a PIN. Fewer payments fail.
  • No fiscalisation needed for these payments. BankPay is a cashless IBAN-to-IBAN transfer, and per State Tax Service guidance no PRRO applies. Note: card payments through Portmone still require fiscalisation, connected separately through Vchasno.Kasa or Checkbox PRRO from the Shopify App Store.
  • A lower business rate. Portmone sets a reduced rate for BankPay compared with card acquiring. The details are agreed in the contract.
  • Fast refunds. Where a refund is needed, the customer receives it the next day through Portmone.

Frequently asked questions: scenarios and integrations

do I need an account at a particular bank for Portmone?

No. Portmone works with a sole proprietor or LLC account at any Ukrainian bank. That sets it apart from plata by mono, which requires an account at monobank specifically. We recommend banks with fast verification — monobank Business, UKRSIB, Sense Bank, PUMB. The choice of bank has no effect on how the integration works.

can I get an individual acquiring rate?

Yes, and this is one of Portmone’s distinctive advantages. Above ₴1,000,000 a month in turnover, or in specific categories (B2B, insurance, utilities), Portmone offers a negotiated rate that can come down to 1.5–2%. For comparison: LiqPay charges a fixed 2.75% and WayForPay starts at 2%. Negotiations are run by a dedicated Portmone manager — we help coordinate the process.

how do I activate BankPay after connecting Checkout?

BankPay is activated automatically when Portmone is connected through our Checkout integration. A “BankPay” option appears at the Payment step in Shopify Checkout, next to cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The customer selects BankPay, picks their bank and device operating system, and receives either a scannable QR code or a clickable link. No individual configuration is needed — it works out of the box.

does Portmone Checkout on Shopify require fiscalisation?

Yes, for card payments it does. Fiscalisation is connected as a separate app from the Shopify App Store: Vchasno.Kasa (our app, ★ 5.0) or Checkbox PRRO. BankPay is the exception: those payments need no PRRO, because they are cashless IBAN-to-IBAN transfers rather than card transactions (per State Tax Service guidance). In a mixed setup, card-paying customers are fiscalised through the PRRO and BankPay customers are not.

what documents are needed to get started?

A copy of the registration documents for the sole proprietor or LLC; a bank statement or confirmation that the account is open; a description of the store (website link, product categories, sales geography); a returns policy on the site; a privacy policy. Stores in certain categories (jewellery, alcohol, licensed goods) may need additional licences. Portmone is PCI DSS certified and therefore reviews applications thoroughly — this is normal and it is what keeps the service stable.

how does Portmone differ from plata by mono and LiqPay?

Three key differences. First, age and stability: Portmone dates to 2002, LiqPay to 2008, monobank to 2020. Second, BankPay: a payment method only Portmone offers. Third, tariff flexibility: Portmone negotiates with each store individually, while plata by mono and LiqPay have fixed rates. plata by mono wins on fee (1.3%), LiqPay on instalments up to 25 payments, and Portmone on BankPay and rate flexibility.

what is Kaspi.kz, and why does it own Portmone?

Kaspi.kz is Kazakhstan’s largest fintech group, valued above $10 billion, with shares traded on NASDAQ and the London Stock Exchange. In 2023 Kaspi.kz acquired 100% of Portmone. For merchants that means stable funding for Portmone’s development, international-grade technology and access to the experience of a regional fintech leader — additional assurance that the infrastructure and payment products will keep improving.

how long does connecting Portmone Checkout take?

The whole chain takes 7–10 business days: one day to prepare the application and documents, 2–5 days for Portmone’s review, and 1–3 days for the technical integration on the TradeMinister side. Once approved, we install the Portmone Payment app for Shopify, configure it for your store, run a test order and hand it over. Fiscalisation (Vchasno.Kasa or Checkbox PRRO) can be connected in parallel.

how it compares with the alternatives on the Ukrainian Shopify market

There are three fundamentally different approaches to connecting acquiring on the Thank You page in the Ukrainian Shopify market. TradeMinister + Portmone is a payment integration through Manual Payment Method with Portmone, a national Ukrainian payment system (operating since 2002, part of Kaspi.kz, PCI DSS Level 1, standard rate up to 2%): the standard Shopify Checkout is preserved, payment happens on the Thank You page, and recurring payments and card tokenization are supported natively. Walnut Checkout and Chekly both replace the standard Shopify Checkout with their own: Walnut Checkout does not support Portmone as a provider (only plata by mono / LiqPay / WayForPay), while Chekly depends on whichever providers are connected. On compliance: Portmone complies with the Shopify Terms of use (section 8); Walnut Checkout and Chekly directly breach Shopify’s rules by replacing the standard Checkout with a third-party one.

The criteria come from the Shopify Terms of use (section 8). Shopify requires all online sales to go through the standard Shopify Checkout — replacing Checkout with a third-party solution (as Walnut Checkout and Chekly do) is classed as a Partner Program violation and can get a store suspended. Portmone on the Thank You page runs through Manual Payment Method, a built-in Shopify mechanism: the standard Checkout is preserved and the setup complies with section 8 of the Terms of use.

TradeMinister + Portmone is the right fit if you need a compliant payment integration with recurring payments and tokenization (subscription models, membership fees) and you serve an audience aged 30+ that already knows Portmone. Walnut Checkout and Chekly neither offer Portmone as a provider nor match its native recurring billing. If you need full compliance and orders created only after payment, look at Portmone for Shopify Checkout through the official Payment Apps API (compared in the table below).

in depth — Portmone on the Thank You page

How do I connect Portmone to Shopify?

A Portmone integration with Shopify through TradeMinister takes 1–3 business days. The developer installs the module on the Thank You page, configures the connection to the Portmone Payment Gateway API using your payee_id, login and password, tests payment on a real order and hands over documentation. After payment Portmone sends an MD5-signed callback to Shopify and the order status changes to Paid automatically. You will need a Portmone account (registration at portmone.com.ua is free), a business account for a sole proprietor or LLC, and a live Shopify store.

How much does a Portmone integration for Shopify cost?

There are three options: full payment — ₴8,800; payment with a cash-on-delivery prepayment — ₴10,800; full KeyCRM integration — ₴17,400. QR payments under NBU standard No. 97 can be added on request as a separate service. Maintenance from year two is ₴3,600 a year (hosting for the QR reconciliation server plus technical support). Portmone acquiring is up to 2% on the standard tariff (the exact rate is agreed with a Portmone manager based on your category and volume). TradeMinister charges no additional transaction fees.

Does Portmone support recurring payments and subscriptions on Shopify?

Yes. Portmone supports card tokenization and recurring charges — a key advantage for stores with subscription models, membership fees or regular deliveries. On the first payment the customer’s card is stored in Portmone’s secure vault and assigned a unique token. Subsequent payments are charged automatically against that token, with no card details entered. To run subscriptions on Shopify we use a separate product, Recurring payments for Shopify. For one-off purchases, Portmone works as ordinary acquiring.

How does Portmone differ from the other Ukrainian payment gateways?

Portmone is one of the oldest Ukrainian payment services (operating since 2002) and is widely recognised by customers aged 30+ thanks to utility and telecom payments. The key differences: (1) high trust among older customers, which can lift conversion in certain segments; (2) native support for recurring payments and card tokenization, which suits subscriptions; (3) a broad network of Portmone terminals across Ukraine, which part of the audience uses. The fee is up to 2% on the standard tariff — comparable to WayForPay’s 2%, above monobank’s and NovaPay’s 1.3%. For stores with subscriptions and recurring payments, Portmone is often the better choice over monobank or LiqPay.

Does Portmone integrate with KeyCRM?

Yes. The “full KeyCRM integration” option (₴17,400) syncs every Portmone order into two separate financial records in KeyCRM: the prepayment (paid through Portmone) and the balance due (pending with Nova Poshta on cash-on-delivery). Once the customer receives the order, Nova Poshta returns the balance and KeyCRM closes the outstanding record automatically. The result is accurate financial reporting with no manual corrections. The integration runs on the Portmone Payment Gateway API and the KeyCRM API. TradeMinister has been building Shopify payment integrations since 2016.

Which payment methods does Portmone support?

Portmone supports Visa and Mastercard from any bank (including foreign ones), Apple Pay on iOS devices (Touch ID / Face ID) and Google Pay (depending on the store configuration — confirmed during setup). Customers with a Portmone account can also pay from their service balance without entering card details. On request, direct QR payments to an IBAN are available as a separate service (NBU standard No. 97) — a good fit for customers who prefer a transfer with no acquiring fee.

How does MultiFOP work with Portmone in a single Shopify store?

The MultiFOP option (₴40,000 one-time) is for businesses that sell through several sole proprietors but do not want to split the storefront into separate Shopify stores. Each proprietor gets their own Portmone merchant account (their own payee_id, login and API password), so funds land in separate bank accounts with no cross-transfers. PRRO receipts are split on the Checkbox side: each proprietor gets their own cash register and digital signature key, and receipts are routed to the right register automatically. The rule for picking a proprietor per order is configured to your processes: by fulfilment warehouse, by product tag or collection, by order value or any other criterion. Separate reports and payouts from Portmone for each proprietor keep tax accounting accurate without splitting transactions by hand. MultiFOP includes one year of support.

Frequently asked questions: scenarios and integrations

can QR payments be added to the same page?

On request we add QR payments under NBU standard No. 97 as a separate service. The Thank You page then shows a QR code with the IBAN details next to the Portmone button. The customer can scan it with any banking app (monobank, PrivatBank, Oschadbank, PUMB and others). There is no acquiring fee and no fiscalisation requirement.

how does a cash-on-delivery prepayment work?

When placing an order with Nova Poshta delivery, the customer selects “cash on delivery with prepayment”. On the Thank You page they pay only the prepayment amount (say ₴200) through Portmone. A PRRO receipt is issued for that amount through Checkbox. The balance is passed into the Nova Poshta waybill as a “money transfer on instruction” and paid on collection.

how do I refund a customer?

Card refunds are made from the Portmone dashboard, or automatically through the Portmone API. Funds return to the customer’s card within the usual timeframe (up to 10 banking days). QR payments (IBAN transfers) are refunded through online banking as an ordinary transfer to the customer’s account. The Shopify order is marked Refunded manually or through Shopify Flow.

how does MultiFOP work in a single Shopify store?

The MultiFOP option (₴40,000) connects several sole proprietors to one Shopify store without separate storefronts. Each proprietor gets their own Portmone merchant account (their own payee_id, login and API password), so payments land in separate bank accounts. PRRO receipts are split by proprietor through separate cashiers in Checkbox. The rule for choosing a proprietor is configured to your business: by fulfilment warehouse, product tag, collection or any other rule. Each proprietor receives their own Portmone payouts and their own reporting — with no manual splitting.
